4 Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair

If you own a heat pump, you’re probably quite happy with its performance. These two-in-one heating and cooling systems are increasing in popularity and for good reason. But just like with any major system, they still require the occasional repair need from every now and then.

What are some signs that your heat pump needs repair? Unusual noises, a heat pump that won’t switch modes, short cycling, and decreased airflow are all good signs that it’s time to call us for professional heat pump repair. Let’s go into more detail so you’ll know which repairs shouldn’t wait.

1. Strange Noises

If you turn on your heat pump and it makes any of these noises, it’s a good sign that it’s in need of some help. Hissing, banging, gurgling, or shrieking noises are not ones you want to hear coming from your heat pump. Some could be caused by a dirty air filter, a loose part, or a lack of lubrication. If you hear any of these noises, call us for prompt repairs that’ll remedy the problem and restore your heat pump to quiet functionality.

2. It Won’t Switch Modes

Is it freezing outside and your heat pump is not blowing hot air, but is emitting cold air instead? Or perhaps it’s blazing hot outside and the reverse is true?

This is likely an issue with the reversing valve. This is the component in your heat pumps responsible for changing modes and should be a fairly easy fix for a professional HVAC technician.

3. Reduced Cooling or Heating

Does it seem like it’s taking forever to heat or cool your home? Hold your hands up to one of the vents to gauge the temperature of the airflow. If it’s lukewarm, it doesn’t matter what season it is–that’s not a good sign.

The conditioned air coming from your vents should feel distinctly hot or cold. If it’s not, that’s a problem that should be addressed quickly. There could be a refrigerant leak somewhere in the system which is not only potentially unhealthy, but will also lead to a sharp increase in your utility bills as your heat pump struggles to reach the set temperature.

4. Short Cycling

Short cycling occurs when your heat pump is unable to complete a heating or cooling cycle. it will turn on for 5 to 10 minutes, then turn itself off just abruptly, and it keeps doing this throughout the day.

This is highly problematic for many reasons. The first is that it keeps the thermostat from reaching the desired temperature. The second is that it greatly increases the wear and tear on your system. Short cycling can be caused by a number of things and should be addressed quickly.

Any heat pump issues should be addressed ASAP to ensure that you don’t suffer from a complete system breakdown. When it’s time for heat pump repairs, turn to our team for the best service.
